How Much is to Much

Apple recently created a new feature in their most recent update called screentime. Screentime is a feature, that can be found in the settings of any iPhone, that shows the user how much time they are spending on their phones. This includes the amount of time spent on each section (entertainment, reading, photos, etc.), each app, and whether or not the weekly usage has gone up or down.

Many people find this feature to be useful when it comes to being aware of how much time they are actually spending on their phones. It shows them just how much time they are wasting on certain apps.

“When I first got my screentime report, I had some insanely high number of hours spent on my phone for the week, and the majority of that came from Netflix. I did not even realize how much time I was spending on my phone, so it was crazy to see that” said senior Olivia Martinez.

Screentime also features settings that allow you to block yourself from using certain apps at certain times, so you can control how often you’re on your phone. While this feature is interesting, it does raise the question of why we would need that at all.

“I think it’s pretty cool that you are able to limit the amount of time spent on your phone, but why does an app have to tell you to do that? I feel like we should just be able to have the self-control to keep ourselves from wasting five hours a day on our phones” said senior Faith Moroe.

Apple is the only phone company that has released anything like this so far. While Android does not feature screentime in their settings, there are apps that you can download that follow the same concept.

“I think the idea of screentime is cool, but unless my phone just comes with it, I am not going to look at it. I don’t feel like it is necessary to go out of my way to look at that stuff.” said senior Lauren Kubena.

All in all most apple users do find this new feature to be interesting, but not that important. At the end of the day, people are going to use their phones as much as they are going to, and an app is not going to do much to change that.

“I like being aware of how much I am on my phone, but I am still on it just as much as I was before,” said senior Madison Galbreath.
