Brenham: New Game

With a new Captain at the helm of the ship that is Magnolia West , Coach JD Berna is well aware of the challenge the Mustangs had with 4A state champs, the Navasota Rattlers and the impenetrable Bryan Vikings.

With the Mustangs pulling away from a contested  victory against The Rattlers 23-22 , yet again our defense, forcing turnovers, allowed the Mustangs to hit a field goal off the ground and take the lead.

The past two years have been hard for the Mustangs to push past Bryan, but in the preseason win against the Vikings, Magnolia West showed  grit in playing well and winning at home 31-14.

During a much-needed win for a young team going into district, West’s Defense has been riding high the past two games during a major transition period, not only did West gained a new staff and head coach, but the returning players have big shoes to fill from the missing seniors of last season.

Yet even with these key players moving on to bigger and better dreams, West was able to beat a team they never could.

What does this mean for this season for the Mustangs?

Confidence is high.

Berna mentioned the impressive defense, led by Coordinator Jeff Joseph, created the anticipated roll of wins with his high energy and a positive outlook for the young team.

“Absolutely, with confidence comes success. The Confidence [of the wins] will most definitely help us with this game and head into district.”

How will these statements hold up against district play ?

The play clock will tell its own story .

With West devoted to proving they are not the stepping stone of the district, being ranked dead last in the beginning of the season created the boost needed to perform in district play.

With a chip on their shoulder, they work to pummel the well known and well equipped Brenham Cubs in the district opener. The Mustangs hold their fate , only time will tell.
