Freshman Katelyn White, is going on her 11th year dancing. She is a member of the Drill Team, and dances at Dance Connections.
She enjoys lyrical and contemporary dancing because she can let out all of her emotions at once.
“If I am having a bad day, I can just go dance and it will make me feel better,” said Katelyn.
Recently, Katelyn tore her hamstring during practice.
“It was very hard, and I was not sure how this would effect my dance career,” said Katelyn.
Fortunately, with lots of care, Katelyn was able to overcome this injury, though her alternative plan would be to focus on school.
Her aunt is the person who inspired her to dance, as she is a dance teacher, and Katelyn has always wanted to be like her.
Her least favorite thing about dance is the long practices, but she knows it is worth it in the end. On a day-to-day basis, she practices for 3-4 hours.
The biggest challenge to face is feeling she is not good enough and is always lacking self confidence. That is why, before going on stage, Katelyn usually has a close friend by her side to give a pep talk and a hug, so she is not as nervous.
Performing with the Fillies on the football field for the first time was her favorite, and a great time for her.
It is difficult to juggle school into this hobby.
“It is very hard to balance between dance and school because you cannot miss one for the other. It is definitely a challenge I am still trying to figure out.”
Dancing has taught Katelyn many things.
“It is not about winning all the time. It is about doing what you love and having fun while you are doing it.”
