Spring Season Begins
Now that it us spring, the West baseball team has hit the ground running. With tryouts being wrapped up earlier this month the team is set for the season.
“We have added a lot valuables components to our team and we feel like everyone we added will contribute to the success of our team in some way,” Head Coach James Dillard said.
Spring ball looks promising this season and with senior leadership coming back, they are set to have a well gelled group of players.
“We always hope the biggest contributors are the returning lettermen from the previous season, each player on our roster is capable of being a contributor,” Dillard said.
Hopes of a playoff run and state tournaments burn in the eyes of the men as they battle through a daunting regular season.
The team faces some tough opponents this year, teams like Brenham and hometown rival Magnolia, the boys are looking to fight through any team opposition with their grit and tough attitude.
“This year is no different than any other in that we expect to be in the playoffs at the end of the season. Each game will be a dog fight and this district is very competitive, but we think we can also compete,” Coach Dillard said.
Around campus the baseball team does not get much hype. The baseball boys hope to change this attitude this season by looking for great turnouts at home games and crazy student sections when they make the playoffs.
Football creates the largest crowd turnouts but baseball wants a piece of the action. Having the student fan base behind them, who knows what they can accomplish.
After last season’s playoff wins, the boys need to build on this continued success in order to keep state in mind. With some real talent scattered throughout the field and the bullpen, this team can do special things again this season.
“We play a very competitive scrimmage and pre-season schedule. It will allow us to see our guys play and hopefully get better. This will also prepare us for a competitive district schedule,” Dillard said.
