With the last 6 games coming up, the 5-5 Mustangs Boys Basketball team plans to do everything but lose. With the amount of work these students have been putting in everyday, they get better as every game goes by.
Last Friday’s victorious win of 61-48 of the 6-4 district rivals, the Stratford Spartans, helps solidify the hard work the Mustangs have put into their momentum to make the playoffs this year.
According to Head Coach Michael Clifford, the boys primarily “focus a lot on 3 point shooting” in order to out do their opponent and get that W.
With the season being halfway over, these young men have been outstanding individuals on and off the court. Led by seniors Austin Cote and Peter Ellwanger, the team not only shoot three pointers and drives in the paint, but they are phenomenal human beings and make good grades in the classroom.
“The kids in my basketball program are great, they’re great kids, they have good morals, and I love my job because of the kids I work with,” Clifford states.
This year’s varsity team has also set records that previous classes couldn’t do including their 77-34 win against Waller, which was the largest margin of victory in a district game in the history of the school.
Throughout the year, the Mustangs have overcame tough losses, obstacles, and pulled off amazing comebacks. With their hard work and dedication, these young men went into double overtime against Tomball High School and won 79-73.
In the hard fought game against 23-3 New Caney High School, the Mustangs were down in the 4th quarter. There were two seconds left in the game and all odds were against West. All of a sudden, senior Austin Cote pulls up and makes an incredible shot to win the tournament championship game.
With only a handful of games left, the Mustangs plan to show everyone what Magnolia West Basketball is all about.
From the injuries, to the missed shots, to the bad calls, West plans to show off their true skills. With the team growing together and the desire to win, these men are aiming towards the playoffs and intend to show everyone that hard work truly does pay off.
